  • 649 active students with no issues! Went down by 10 since last week.
  • Last year in Nov. we had 817, this year we had 521. December 222 issues, last year 653.
  • Expect the last two weeks to be full with mediation and issues.
  • Admin- Zero tolerance for profanity with staff. Revamp ISAP flow chart. Kicked out? Automatic extension. Kicked out again? Automatic suspension. 1st period going to class, no longer going to ISAP.
  • Hall sweep- Not being transferred into the ISAP list. Parent disconnect with communication about tardy policy.
  • Who is doing hall sweep, who is being sent to ISAP and not. Being sent without an escort.
  • Fix system of communication for ISAP.
  • ISAP list based on consequences, then any kicked out of class kids added. ISAP instructor isn’t able to get attendance list populated until the next day.
  • Unresolved increased from Nov. to Dec.
  • Teachers are not using interventions to try to mitigate tier I behaviors, and higher priority items have to be addressed first.
  • Waiting on approval for other consequences, such as lunch detention, before school detention, after school detention.
  • Electronics a major issue across the board.
  • Staff needs to be addressed with regards to the flow chart.
  • Ask admin to review process/structure for teacher interventions before referrals are submitted.

Pocket Points and Hero Challenge #3!

Hey everyone! The mid-year rush has hit me! From the end of the last challenge until Halloween, everyone who logged Hero points each day has an entry into the current round of Teacher challenges!
Don't forget to log in to Homeroom Hero to earn your points as well!!

Valley is now on Pocket Points! Want a new way to keep students off their phones in your class? Encourage them to use the Pocket Points app! I currently have a store that lets the students exchange Pocket Points for Hero points, or they can use them on any of the retailers on the app. FREE Fazolis, Marks, discounts to Papa Johns, Target, and more. I remind my students at the beginning of class to lock their phone with the pocket points app running. My students have taken to having competitions between them who can go the longest without unlocking their phones!

How it Works

Pocket Points is a new mobile application that gives students rewards for not using their phones during class. Simply open the app on campus, lock your phone, and start gaining points. Points are then used at local and online businesses for awesome student discounts, coupons, or gifts!

Update from Concepcion.
1.     Embedded PD going bell to bell. Can we get let out 5 minutes early? Clemens will address thisResponse: admin is making sure that whoever leads those meetings is following this (using timer)
2.     Hall change issue in front of Chad’s old office. Could we have security presence or hall sweep there or could Towns be a presence there? With Chad being replaced, the replacement will hopefully be the presence. Clemens is also point person.Fix=Mr. Littles
3.     Lunchtime makeup room for assignments or tests where a teacher would be assigned? According to our contract, we cannot do this. Maybe this should be taken care of case by case. If you have students who need this done, maybe just communicate with them individually.
4.     ISAP students coming to class room during ISAP. Solution could be reiteration of school expectation that students shouldn’t call or come up. Could ISAP have an aid? What’s the protocol for getting work back? Clarify that students should stay in there and no phone calls to teachers. ISAP aid could bring work back. Clemens is point for how to get work back.Admin is working with ISAP rooms about expectations and more tech in there too for google classroom
5.     Students being sent back to class after kicked out of class. Solution: consistency of kids not coming back to class. Clemens bringing it to admin.APs looked confused stating that they were all in agreement
6.     Resolution notices. Teachers are not finding out what is happening to students. Solution: Cline suggested checking the DMC. We then realized that admin are not writing resolutions within a timely manner. Clemens will bring to admin. 28% of resolutions are “not resolved” on DMC - this hinders communication. Admin now will get email updates when a referral is written.
7.     Outside food being brought in and students being called down to get food. Solution: students shouldn’t be called down for inappropriate reasons. Clemens will take to admin. Admin will talk to the clerks

New Concerns:
1.     Transition during Viking and advisory time. Solution: hallsweeps between the two, could we get bells during the two? Clemens taking to admin
2.     Lunch periods issues/4th period craziness. Solutions: teacher duty
3.     ISAP pulling students because they want to be in there by choice. Solution: admin describe expectations
4.     Students go to ISAP if in building before school starts. Solution: move late check in front of front doors/view T9 codes
5.     Students leave cafe during lunch for bathroom. Solution: collateral for hall pass to bathroom or going back to bathroom rules from last year

Seclusion and Restraint
Reviewed the data from the PBIS videos and had a plus/delta discussion over info - 104 responses
PLUS - Overall it looked like staff liked mapping activity. 97% of the building seems to think they understand what PBIS does.
DELTA - not represented groups = security guards and cafeteria workers, overall people didn’t feel like our staff is “thoroughly trained and deals with fights correctly” - Cline talked about how some members of the building (clerks, preferred subs, cafeteria, security, custodial, etc.) don’t have the training we have. See plus/delta full list in PBIS drive on Sweet Valley Drive
**Clerks should have access to Harbor for info per McCandless

62 suspensions have happened this year. Some students multiple times.

Cline mentioned that new teachers still don’t have access to writing referrals, and some old teachers haven’t been to through the training for online referrals.

She also mentioned that ISAP isn’t writing any virtually because he doesn’t have access.

Nobody is entering these paper ones into IC, so the highlighted numbers are definitely skewed.

Earbuds/Hallway issues with students before 7:30

Byrd and Concepcion brought up an idea for teachers to write down the names of students who don’t take headphones out after asked in hallway. Students would have a meeting with Stephenson to replace a fun thing like Viking Time.

Mortberg brought up an idea to give out hero point passes in the hall to students who DON’T have their headphones in as a positive reward. Cline/Clemens is going to talk to admin about both ideas.  - ADMIN RESPONSE - love the idea but didn’t want to do it because they felt it was more work on teachers. They feel as though it isn’t necessary and it adds more on teacher plates. There was push back from PBIS to do this. Clemens will take it back to admin. Concepcion and McCandless brought up that there’s no consequence for in the morning if a student cusses at you for asking them to leave the hallways. What do we do? Hare and Stephenson decided we might start a protocol where you send an email to Hare to follow up on camera if you have this issue. This needs to be addressed again.

SECOND ADMIN RESPONSE: they did approve it asking that we have a point person for this. MORTBERG.

WINNERS Hero Challenge #2!

Congratulations to the winners of our Hero Challenge #2! First prize is a $50 Staples gift card. 2nd-6th prizes are Dunkin Donuts Cold Brew tumblers.

Thanks everyone for participating in this round of Hero staff challenge. Round 3 will begin tomorrow, I will post details in the morning.

Hero is a great way to reinforce behavior that we expect in our classrooms and in our building. The students are loving their Hero store rewards, and we are opening the physical store this week. Keep giving out those points! If you need any tips or strategies for how to use Hero in your classroom, I am available to assist demonstrate, strategize, whatever you may need.

I heard...the biology department is going to throw in a special prize for challenge #3...and it might be a free planning period ;-) ;-)

If you have anything you want to give to the Hero store for students, or to the Hero challenge for staff, let me know! We would love to offer our students one-of-a-kind experiences with staff members. Send your ideas my way and we will make it happen!
